International Women's Day special:
Female celebs we love and respect
Female celebs we love and respect
We celebrate women like Mia Farrow , Siti Nurhaliza, Maya Karin, Kimora Lee and many more female celebs who continue to inspire.
It's International Women's Day!
What better way to celebrate on March 8th than with a tribute to some of the most inspirational female celebrities we've come to love and respect.
From the charitable hearts of Malaysian singers like Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, Dato' Sheila Majid and Fauziah Latiff to Hollywood stars truly making a difference in the world, click through the thumbnails for the female celebs we're honouring on International Women's Day.
Malaysian bred Dato' Sheila Majid (left) has come a long way since being picked out to do a demo after she sang at a friend's party. The youngest sibling of 8 has performed at A Pink Jazz Affair in efforts of bringing breast cancer awareness.
The singer was also held the Sheila Majid In Concert - a two night charity concert organized by the National Heart Institute.
Oscar winning actress who gained recognition from her role in 'Titanic' is known to be vocal about her refusal to allow Hollywood dictate her weight. In 2003, British edition of GQ magazine issued an apology for digitally altering her cover photo to make her to look dramatically thinner.
If being realistic about weight and glamourized stick-thin figures isn't enough for you to tip your hat to Winslet, you should know she also founded and established the Golden Hat Foundation - a charity for those affected by autism after her involvement in the documentary 'A Mother's Courage: Talking Back to Autism.'
Female star of 'The Illusionist' Jessica Biel, who is now also fiancé of Justin Timberlake, co-founded the Make the Difference Network with her father and another business partner, Kent McBride at the age of 24.
Biel, who looked extremely fit in a bikini on the cover of July 2007 GQ magazine, also climbed to the summit of the highest mountain in Africa - Mount Kilimanjaro - with members of the United Nation Foundation to raise awareness of the global water crisis. She also supports dozens of charities and foundations ranging from PETA to the Afghanistan Relief Organization.
Timberlake was smart enough to not let this one go!
Mia Farrow
Mia Farrow, now age 67, gained wide acclaim for her role as Allison MacKenzie on 'Peyton Place.' The American humanitarian has appeared in more than 45 films and was named by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in the world in 2008.
Farrow is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who works extensively to draw attention to the fight against polio, a disease she survived as a child. She has also travelled to Darfur multiple times to advocate for Darfuri refugees and is involved with the Dream for Darfur campaign. Farrow also has her own web page with photographs and blog entries from Darfur, Chad and the Central African Republic.
Oprah Winfrey
Two paragraphs won't be enough to list the amount of philanthropic work that Oprah has accomplished. Oprah is ranked as the richest African American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist in American history and was for a time the world's only black billionaire.
She created the Oprah's Angel Network in 1998, supporting charitable projects and providing grants to non-profit organizations around the world - this network alone has raised more than $80, 000, 000 ($1 million by Jon Bon Jovi).
Although dissolved in 2010, Winfrey continues relief efforts as well as her involvement in South Africa, teaching via satellite and visiting children affected by poverty and AIDS.
Ashley Judd
Ashley Judd is daughter to country music singer Naomi Judd; while her mother and sister Wynonna Judd experienced much success as American duo The Judds, Ashley focused on her acting career and global humanitarian efforts.
Her contributions center on becoming a global ambassador for YouthAIDS, a prevention program under the Population Services International. She has travelled with the foundation to places like Cambodia, Kenya, Rwanda and more.
Apart from joining the Leadership Council of the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW), Ashley has also been involved with Women for Women International and Equality Now.
Selena Gomez
Young, talented and influential, 19-year-old Selena Gomez proves that you don't have to be a wild child in Hollywood to make it.
She's too busy shaping a highly successful career to be a bad girl, anyway. Her resume includes the Emmy-winning Disney show 'Wizards of Waverly Place'; gold and platinum certified albums with her band Selena Gomez & The Scene; and being the youngest UNICEF ambassador ever.
Angelina Jolie
Our hats go off to Hollywood superwoman Angelina Jolie. The actress juggles her career, six kids and Brad Pitt, and still makes time for humanitarian work.
Jolie has been working closely with the United Nations for over 10 years now, meeting with refugees all around the world to raise awareness on 'forgotten emergencies'.
Speaking about her joining the UN, Jolie said, 'We cannot close ourselves off to information and ignore the fact that millions of people are out there suffering... All of us would like to believe that if we were in a bad situation someone would help us.'
Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton)
Kate Middleton may be a princess now, but she's not letting that label go to her head. Poised, modest and classy, the Duchess of Cambridge has even become somewhat of a celebrity in the United States.
People seem to love that 30-year-old Kate isn't afraid to get her hands dirty and is a sporty, outdoorsy girl. Plus, she did her own makeup on her wedding day; name any other princess who'd do the same. Kate is busy these days since becoming patron of five charities that include children's hospices and an addiction charity.
Shakira
Colombian singer Shakira isn't just known for having a body that's almost criminal; she's highly committed to rebuilding Haiti after the country was struck with a devastating earthquake and is a strong advocate of education for children.
Shakira has helped raise millions to aid developing communities by reaching out to the Spanish government, philanthropists and through her own charity foundation, Pies Descalzos.
Angelica Lee Sinje
Kedah-born Angelica Lee Sinje is not only an award-winning actress in Hong Kong, she's also one of the very few Asian stars awarded at the Berlin Film Festival.
Married to director Oxide Pang, Lee is also an ambassador for World Vision, visiting projects in Mongolia, Kenya and India. The actress regularly gives talks on child sponsorship to encourage the public in giving back to the community.
Datuk Siti Nurhaliza
It's more than just a sweet face and a great voice that makes us love Datuk Siti Nurhaliza; Malaysia's pop princess is also one the country's most charitable celebrities.
Siti has helped raise funds for children to undergo heart surgery and together with her businessman husband, Datuk Khalid, has donated millions to charity and community welfare. She's been in showbiz for 18 years now and still remains one of the most humble stars around
Kimora Lee
When Kimora Lee came to Malaysia in November last year, she had our local women screaming in excitement (we're not kidding!) for a glimpse of Miss Fabulosity herself.
It's hardly a surprise; in person, Kimora is about as genuine as it gets. She had a clear message for Malaysian women on how to be fabulous: beauty really comes from within and it comes in all shapes and sizes. Plus, you gotta love how blunt and hilarious she is, saying 'You can be number one and have a little dignity and a little respect and you don't have to be naked.'
